CASE STUDY 03
Journey to the Upright Rainbow
Kupe’s Voyage was a project & collaboration between a student and a real-world client, with the client being MOTAT (Museum of Transport and Technology) based in Auckland, New Zealand.
Overview
This brief was presented by a real-world client who outlined their specific needs, which were to create an exhibit at MOTAT, which is the Museum of Transport and Technology in Auckland, using the space provided while sharing the story of Kupe.
The Challenge
MOTAT had a specific light, which was called the Upsidedown Rainbow in the space, and the challenge was to use this as part of our exhibit.
Research & Insights
Our key research and insights were that the demographic for our exhibit is aimed at school children aged 5 - 10 who typically go to the MOTAT on school trips for educational purposes.
The exhibit needed to be extremely user-friendly as young children would be using the projected exhibit, the language needed to be simple, and the colours to be inviting and vibrant for the target audience.
Design Process
My focus was on the graphic collateral and graphics, which consisted of creating a logo and brand identity, mockupping said logo using a brand guideline, creating posters, stickers, colouring sheets and along with digital mockups such as Instagram mockups.
A lot of experimentation went into this, as focusing it down to a demographic of 5 - 10 years is still a large range, as the learning level through those age groups is quite spread out.
Conclusion
This project was extremely enjoyable as working with a real-world client was an exciting change from using a brief provided by the university. We recieved real world feedback. Our exhibit went live at MOTAT, and seeing it come to life was special to see as children were invited to use it, and we were able to extract a lot of user research from this.
